Manifestation · The version with evidence
WOOP Manifestation Planner
Most manifestation stops at the dream. This planner adds the two steps that studies say make the difference: the obstacle inside you, and an if-then plan to beat it. Psychologists call it mental contrasting with implementation intentions, WOOP for short: Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. Fill in the four boxes. Your plan stays in your browser.
Your if-then line
Say the line once, out loud or in your head. When the moment comes, the plan is already made. Run through all four steps again whenever the wish or the obstacle changes.
How it works
Why the obstacle step matters
1. The dream alone backfires
In Gabriele Oettingen’s studies, people who pictured their wish most positively did worse: graduates sent fewer applications and got fewer job offers two years later. Picturing the goal as already done lets the mind relax, and energy drops. The full evidence is on is the law of attraction real?
2. Contrast the dream with what is in the way
Oettingen’s fix is to picture the best outcome, then name the main obstacle inside you: a habit, a fear, a feeling. Holding the two side by side shows whether the wish is worth the effort and what must change.
3. Make one if-then plan
Peter Gollwitzer’s if-then plans link a moment to an action: “If X happens, then I will do Y.” Across 94 tests they had a medium-to-large effect on reaching goals. The planner turns your obstacle and plan into that exact sentence.
4. What the combined method shows
A 2021 review of 21 studies with nearly 16,000 people found that the two steps together help people reach goals, with a small-to-medium effect. The authors note the true effect may be smaller, because studies that find nothing are less often published.
Real vs legend
What this planner does and does not do
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| If-then plans help people reach goals. | Real · 94 tests |
| Contrasting the wish with the obstacle helps. | Real · 21 studies, small to medium |
| Picturing only the dream helps. | Backwards · predicts worse results |
| Writing it down sends it out to the universe. | No evidence |
| It works for every goal and every person. | No · effects are averages |
The site’s other manifestation tool, the 369 Method Journal, follows the popular 3, 6, 9 writing ritual. This one follows the studies. The roots of both are on what is Hermeticism?
Questions
WOOP planner FAQ
What does WOOP stand for?
Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. It is the everyday name for mental contrasting with implementation intentions, a method developed by the psychologist Gabriele Oettingen with Peter Gollwitzer’s if-then plans.
Is WOOP a manifestation technique?
It is the one with evidence. Like manifestation, it starts with a clear wish and a vivid picture of the outcome. Unlike most manifestation, it then asks what inside you blocks the wish and plans for it.
How is this different from the 369 method?
The 369 method writes a wish 3, 6 and 9 times a day. WOOP pictures the wish once, then turns the obstacle into a plan. Only the second has been tested in controlled studies.
How often should I do it?
Once for each wish takes a few minutes. Do it again when the wish, the obstacle or your situation changes. The if-then line is the part to keep in mind every day.
What makes a good obstacle?
One that is inside you and that you can act on: a habit, an excuse, a feeling, a thought. “It rains” is a situation. “When it rains I decide to skip” is an obstacle you can plan for.
Is my plan sent anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser. Copy link puts the text in the page address so the link reopens your plan, so only share that link with people you want to see it.
