Gematria · Four alphabets

Gematria Calculator

Gematria turns every letter of a word into a number and adds them up, because in Hebrew, Greek and Arabic the letters were also the numerals. Type any word and each letter shows its value: נרון קסר, Nero Caesar in Hebrew letters, comes to 666. Three methods side by side, plus other words with the same total. Nothing leaves your device.

Standard uses the old numeral value of each letter. Ordinal uses its place in the alphabet. Reduced cuts each letter to one digit, so 400 counts 4. Hebrew tradition uses all three. English had no letter numerals, so its values here are the modern A = 1 to Z = 26. Tap a method to see its sum.

How it works

Letters that were numbers

1. Every letter has a value

Hebrew, Greek and Arabic once wrote numbers with letters. The first nine letters count 1 to 9, the next nine count 10 to 90, and the rest count by hundreds. Hebrew stops at tav, 400. Greek adds three old signs to reach 900. The Arabic abjad order reaches ghayn, 1000. See the full Hebrew letter values, the Greek numerals and the abjad numerals.

2. Add them up

A word's gematria is the sum of its letters. חי, the Hebrew word for alive, is chet 8 plus yod 10, which is why 18 is a lucky number in Jewish custom. Final letter shapes, such as ם at the end of a word, count the same as the regular letter in the standard method. Vowel marks and accents are removed first.

3. Three methods

Standard uses the numeral values. Ordinal uses each letter's place in its alphabet, alef 1 to tav 22 and A 1 to Z 26. Reduced keeps one digit per letter, so shin 300 counts 3. For Arabic, the ordinal place is taken in the abjad order. For English, standard and ordinal are the same, because English never had letter numerals. 4. The total, collapsed

Below the total, the calculator also adds the digits of the total down to one digit, the digital root. That step is this site's habit, not part of classical gematria. Rabbis used gematria as a way to read and remember, and many people enjoy it that way today. The adding is exact. What a total means is interpretation. With hundreds of words and several methods, matching totals turn up by chance all the time. The page on why 666 is the number of the beast shows the oldest famous case.

Questions

Gematria calculator FAQ

What is a gematria calculator used for?

It adds up the number values of the letters in a word. In Hebrew, Greek and Arabic every letter was also a numeral, so a word has a total, and gematria compares words that share a total. The calculator does the adding and finds other words with the same number.

How do I calculate my name in gematria?

Type it in. In English the calculator counts A = 1 up to Z = 26, a modern method. For a Hebrew value you need the name spelled in Hebrew letters, and there is often more than one accepted spelling, so the total depends on the spelling you choose. Use the letter pad to type Hebrew, Greek or Arabic.

What is 666 in gematria?

The best known 666 is Nero Caesar written in Hebrew letters, נרון קסר: 50 + 200 + 6 + 50 + 100 + 60 + 200 = 666. Spelled without the second nun, נרו קסר, it adds up to 616, the other number of the beast found in some early manuscripts.

What number is Jesus in gematria?

In Greek, Ἰησοῦς adds up to 888: iota 10, eta 8, sigma 200, omicron 70, upsilon 400, sigma 200. That is Greek isopsephy, the Greek form of gematria.

Which method is the right one?

Standard values are the historical numerals of Hebrew, Greek and Arabic. Ordinal and reduced are traditional variations in Hebrew as well. English never had letter numerals, so every English method, including A = 1 to Z = 26, is a modern convention.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The letters are added up in your browser, and nothing is uploaded or stored. The text sits in the page address only so that Copy link can reopen the same result.
